July and August are traditionally slow months for real estate. Lots of people are on vacation, and not many want to be spending their summer getting their home ready to be listed or looking at homes that are already on the market. Activity picks up right after Labor Day, and tails off again around Thanksgiving.
Despite the hot summer weather, there’s a lot for us to be thinking about. On the national level, there’s an important election coming up in November, and no matter who wins, Congress will have to make a decision on whether or not to extend the Bush tax cuts and, if so, to whom and for how long. The outlook for jobs is still poor, and most businesses aren’t hiring, or if they are hiring they’re hiring temporary workers.
On the international scene, the Euro Zone is still in a mess and it’s not clear what’s going to happen or even whether the present Euro Zone will remain intact. China’s growth seem to be slowing down, and that slowdown will affect the rest of the world. Tensions are high in the Middle East, with Syria, Iran and Israel in the news almost daily.
Of course, there are lots of things to look forward to as well. The upcoming Olympics are a great example. Our little town of Fair Haven has a young man who’s on the U.S. Olympic swimming team. 21-year old Connor Jaeger, who’s a student at the University of Michigan and who will be competing in the 1,500 freesytle swimming event (go, Connor!).
