Rumson Jump Starts St. Patrick’s Day

Red, White, Blue and Green

Red, White, Blue and Green

There’s always something fun going on in Rumson-Fair Haven.

Last night there was an unusual party in Rumson at Victory Park. In preparation for the 2013 Rumson St. Patrick’s Day parade there was a tree lighting. Yes, a tree lighting, but this time the tree was lit with thousands of tiny green laser lights.

I stopped by for just a brief while but I’m glad I did. Professor Michael O’Maillie, of Claddagh na nGael, an organization which promotes Irish culture (link: gave a short talk on Irish history, including stories about the early Christian church in Ireland, and the roles played by St. Brendan and St. Patrick.

Local vendors provided free Irish soda bread, scones, hot cocoa, potato soup, and coffee. It was a cold night so the hot beverages were very popular. I was only there for a brief time so I missed Mayor Ekdahl’s official proclamation of the parade, as well as the live Irish music by TRINITY and David McCarthy.

The actual parade will be on Sunday, March 10th, and Tim McLoone will be the Grand Marshall. It promises to be a real hoot, so make sure you’re there wearing green. For more information about the parade, check out the web site
